Carved bone, glass, wood, trade beads necklace

This exotic necklace has beads that have traveled far and wide and can probably tell a lot of fascinating tales! The centerpiece is carved water buffalo horn and I found it as part of an ugly necklace in a Beijing market. So I took it apart and gave this intriguing bead a new life as a centerpiece. This complicated necklace features five strands on each side woven and entwined with beads of black Czech glass, carved bone, cranberry resin beads, seed beads, red thin discs that were vinyl records in another life, black coco, two kinds of striped trade beads usually made in Europe and used to barter in Africa, carved wood, and please note the carved bone elephant. Also, there is a little surprise of two green beads on each side just to amuse the eye! The tassel features seed beads in burgundy shades and black with bone charms of a hand and a goddess. The clasp is a vintage button from my Mother’s and Grandmother’s button box. The necklace is 24” and the centerpiece totals 9”.   $300
